SWIM DIAPERS – A MUST HAVE FOR THIS SEASON’S POOL FASHION

Posted by

If you told me a few years ago that my college degree would lead me to write a blog about swim diapers, I would have chuckled at you and dropped out. Yet here we are lol! If your child is under 4 years old, this post is for you.

You have two options for the swimwear you bring your child to lessons in – disposable swim diapers or reusable cloth swim diapers. Now, there are facilities that require you to double up on whatever swim diaper you choose for the sake of pool cleanliness, but generally one or the other does suffice. Now, some of you may be wondering why I’m telling you this. The reason is because every once in awhile, a swimmer comes in with a regular diaper on and something not so great happens – the diaper expands and explodes in the water, causing the facility to close the pool for up to 24 hours! NOT FUN.

Regular diapers are meant to absorb whatever happens to show up in them throughout the day and are designed with chemicals that cause it to expand to meet those absorbent needs. There is, however, a limit to how much a diaper can expand before it pops and after it’s exceeded that limit in the pool, the chemicals can be released into the water, causing issues with the pool system. It also isn’t the healthiest for your swimmer’s skin to be in contact with a diaper that’s stretched and exposing them to those chemicals.

My advice: stick to double diaper for your swimmers. Dress them in a disposable swim diaper underneath and reusable cloth diaper over it to ensure that 1) the swimwear they’re wearing doesn’t cause harm to their skin, or the pool, and 2) any accidents made in the pool, aren’t able to escape into the water, which could otherwise cause a facility to close for up to 16 hours.

Which diaper brands are you loyal to? Do they make swim diapers? Let me know which you prefer so I can pass along any suggestions in class!
